We couldn't go to RMNP Thursday, we had babysitting duty. We went Friday instead. It was in the 40's, we got to at least 8,800ft, hiked from 12:30 to 5pm with a few short breaks to catch our breath, enjoy the scenery and take some photos. Due to the lack of oxygen, the abundance of snow, mud and rocks on the trail, we only covered 6.4 miles in that time. We saw deer, elk, a fox, birds including woodpeckers, magpies and a vulture. Time was somewhat less of a concern than the our first trip to the park-so we planned on making it to the waterfall we didn't have time for on the first trip. We never got to the waterfall; we made a wrong turn, still not sure where though. We reviewed the map while walking and it led me to believe that we were heading in the wrong direction. We made a plan, we would turn around if we didn't see a sign within 15 minutes (at that point we had already been going in the wrong direction for at least an hour). At 12 minutes we saw the sign, we were heading where I thought we were (the wrong way), towards a lake instead of the waterfall. Fortunately, the trails met up later and head back to where we had started. Despite the cold and our moderate pace, we drank all of the water we brought...all ~110 oz. It's a good thing we didn't really get lost, no cell phone reception, no gps, and very few people on the trail. The longest we went without seeing anyone else was, of course, when we were concerned about our location, at least 2hrs. More pics are posted on photobucket (they are in a folder located in the 'Estes Park and RMNP' album called "RMNP 041009'). Here is a topo map of our trail. http://www.mountaindrama.com/Hikes/TopoMaps/Odessa.html
We started at the top right corner, walked WSW to "The Pool" We then intended to continue to Fern Falls but instead headed East to Cub Lake, stayed on the trail until the edge of the map, then back up to the start.
